Nuclear power for climate protection: a pro & con

 

The power consumption for AI applications is growing beyond our heads. Together with the necessary phase-out of fossil sources in view of global warming, many industrialized countries are running into a huge energy shortage. We cannot currently expand them as quickly as we need renewable sources. Wind turbines and solar panels need space and, above all, the consent of the people who live nearby. The necessary transmission networks and storage facilities are also currently overwhelming planners.

For ecological and economic reasons, it would have been smarter to keep the existing nuclear power plants online longer in order to phase out fossil fuels. Even if there is still no final storage facility for highly radioactive waste in Germany. The warehouse will be needed anyway, and the additional waste that would have been created by extending the running times could definitely have been managed. Instead, Germany unnecessarily shut down its nuclear power plants and expensively subsidized renewable sources. The consequences: high energy costs and at the same time miserable CO2-balance sheet.

Should the existing power plants be restarted? Yes, if it is justifiable in terms of safety and economics, and also the CO2-Balance sheet is sufficiently positive. These three conditions apply to existing nuclear power plants – they have proven that they deliver climate-friendly electricity safely and profitably.

The test case will be the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in the US state of Pennsylvania. Microsoft wants to put reactor unit 1, which was not affected by the 1979 nuclear accident and was shut down five years ago, back into operation and use the electricity to operate its data centers. The owner has already announced plans to ramp up the block – a first for the USA. If the authorities approve Three Mile Island 2.0, it will be known how much it will cost to put it back into operation. Small, modular reactors with which Google wants to cover its electricity needs still have to be proven or approved.

But time is running out. If we do not quickly develop new, more climate-friendly sources of electricity, the earth will continue to warm mercilessly. The consequences are already visible today and they can be fatal, as was the case with the devastating storm disaster in the Spanish region of Valencia.”
